Hi,
Renal glycosuria is presence of
glucose in the urine without
hyperglycemia or excretion of glucose in the urine in presence of the normal blood glucose. This condition is more common during
pregnancy because of the low renal threshold for glucose excretion. The increase in the glomerular filtration rate during pregnancy delivers an increased glucose load to the renal tubules. It is usually asymptomatic and is less likely to cause any complications. It may subside after the delivery however, it may be the first sign of
gestational diabetes and some pregnant mothers with renal glycosuria may continue to develop
diabetes mellitus after delivery. Therefore, appropriate testing should be conducted to rule out diabetes and to regularly monitor those with confirmed renal glycosuria.
Renal glycosuria of pregnancy as such does not cause any complication however diabetes during pregnancy may lead to baby with excess
birth weight. This can lead to problems in delivery, trauma to the child and mother, and a sudden drop in blood glucose for the baby after birth. Unborn babies who are exposed for a long time to high blood glucose during pregnancy are at higher risk of developing diabetes in the future.
