I had some blood work done today, nine days after stopping heavy drinking. I have drank heavily for years. Last year my gamma gt was 61, now it is 121. I did take a course of lorazapam this time to help me with stopping. How scary is this new figure and could it mean cirrhosis?
You are concerned that your GGT was elevated after you stopped drinking 9 days ago. This elevation could be the early signs of cirrhosis or it could just mean your liver has not had time to completely get the alcohol out of your system. Before making any judgments on your GGT I recommend repeating your labs in 1 month.
I congratulate you on stopping your alcohol use. With continue abstinence your body can heal itself and you can live a normal healthy life.
Hope I answered you question. Please contact us again with your medical questions and concerns.
