We did not understand whether you are asking about your father?s brother or for own baby ? We answer this question in General.
Thalassemia is an inherited condition. The genes received from one's parents before birth determine whether a person will have thalassemia. Thalassemia cannot be passed on to another person. The clinical severity of thalassemia varies tremendously depending on the exact nature of the genes that a person inherits. The chances of passing on to the next generation depends on the status of both the parents whether they have Major, Minor Thalessmia or Normal persons(whether they have traits or the exact disease in them). Each combination will have different genotypes and the phenotypes too.
Though it can never be ruled out based on your history alone , we would recommend you to get yourself evaluated if you have the trait and if it passes to your child. Single-tube osmotic fragility test and a modified dichlorophenolindophenol (DCIP) test are the tests that you would have to undergo. Combination of both these tests can detect 3 important forms of thalassemia. When put together they have 100.0% sensitivity, 87.1% specificity.
