Hello,
I'm afraid you haven't provided enough information for your condition so it wouldn't be possible to give you a more personalized answer but I'll give you the best I can.
Atorvastatin is a drug that lowers serum lipid levels (mostly
total cholesterol and LDL but also triglycerides). High lipid levels (besides HDL which is protective) are connected with cardiovascular morbidity. Lowering them helps selected patients to reduce their cardiovascular risk which means less coronary events, less strokes etc
Not every patient receives benefit from atorvastatin (or any statin). If you want to know how much benefit is expected then you need an estimation of your cardiovascular risk which is based on several parameters like blood pressure (arterial
hypertension),
smoking,
diabetes, etc and above all your age.
What is valuable for one patient may confer no benefit for the other.
I'll tell about some of the most important side effects that you need to know.
Liver damage and
myopathy is a possible danger when taking statins particularly if you're on the highest doses or you're concurrently taking other drugs. Thankfully both of these side effects are rather mild in most cases but you have to know that sometimes (rarely) severe liver and muscle damage can occur. 10mg per day is considered a safe dose which means that serious side effects are less likely - but not impossible - to happen.
There are a lot of side effects besides the aforementioned ones. You may consult the summary of product characteristics that's included in the package and ask again if you need to discuss any of them in more detail.
I hope I've addressed your concerns.
Kind Regards!
