What Is The Best Medicine For GERD?

I recently had a pretty bad experience with GERD and since I ve been taking Nexium and Zantac when needed. But now when I do any strenuous activity including running, or walking up a flight of stairs I get this intense burning in my throat and it makes it hard to continue exercising. Is this something happening because of the GERD?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The burning sensation in throat can be attributed to reflux of acid. The acid reflux is caused due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus, which is characteristic of GERD.

Medical management consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Esomeprazole/ Nexiym (which prevent acid formation in stomach)+ Domperidone preparations (strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux)

In addition, you needs to follow certain diet & lifestyle measures, such as:
1. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
2. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

General Surgeon Dr. Grzegorz Stanko's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Actually Nexium is consider to be the strongest GERD medicine. However in some cases medicines are not effective and even with strongest one you still can have GERD symptoms. If you are young person, and medicines do not help you, surgery called fundoplication should be considered. It may set you free from all GERD symptoms.

I suggest you to consult gastroenterologist and discuss this solution.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
