Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is 96 and in terrible pain from arthritis. the problem is she is allergic to medications with codiene. She is in a nursing home and they want to give her morphine. Are ther any other medications she could take for pain? YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Since she is allergic to opioids, she can try non opioids like gabapentin.
Gabapentin is an excellent drug with good results and it is safe in elderly with very minimal side effects. She can try NSAIDs like ibuprofen or kerrolac but prolonged use is not recommended.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
