What Is The Cause And Treatment For Urinary Incontinence?

Hi, I am 24, female, and have been experiencing urinary incontinence lately. It is usually a sudden urge to urinate--if I am not within range of a loo, accidents have happened. Occasionally I will go to the toilet and no urine will pass. And I often need to awake at night to go to the loo. Again, accidents at night may occur. This is making me miserable and panicked. So far all accidents have been in a home environment, but I am well aware it may occur another time! What should I do? I believe there may be a hereditary problem as my mum has had a lot of bladder problems--resorting to surgery for help. I am scared a doctor may tell me I need the same.

Urologist 's  Response
Hello,

You appear to have overactive bladder and will need specialized evaluation and treatment but needing surgery is very unlikely to happen. I would like to know a few more details to answer your query better.
1. How long have you been having these symptoms?
2. When you pass urine is there any slowing of the stream?
3. When you have a sudden urge to pass urine, how much urine do you pass, just a few drops or a good amount?
4. Do you have any burning sensation during urination?
5. How is your personal life, are you in a stressful environment at home or work?

Your symptoms point towards a possibility of overactive bladder, but it is important to make sure that your urinary bladder is normal structurally with no infections or stones. It is definitely possible to bring it under control with proper medication and certain lifestyle changes. I would ask you to not worry as this is not something hereditary and your local urologist will guide you further about the tests required to establish a diagnosis and for treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Karthik Rajan
