Fortunately, there is no association with
contraceptive use and sore throat with white patches. It sounds like you have pharyngitis and tonsillitis. Pharyngitis is most commonly caused by acute viral infections; however,
Streptococcus pharyngitis (strep throat) is a common clinical focus due to its potential for preventable suppurative (e.g., retropharyngeal or
peritonsillar abscess) and nonsuppurative (e.g., rheumatic sequelae) complications. The rapid strep swab is a very good test. Your doctor should have sent your throat swab into the lab for further culture.
Streptococcal pharyngitis runs a 5- to 7-day course with peak fever at 2 to 3 days. Symptoms will resolve spontaneously without treatment.
I would recommend:
-wash hands frequently
-avoid first or second hand smoking
-use a humidifier at night
-salt water gargles
-
Acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and fevers
-Throat lozengers
-Increase fluid intake
-Update vaccinations - diphtheria is very rare, but can cause similar symptoms with white spots
-If tonsillar exudates continue without a cough and if you develop fevers greater than 100.5, I would recommend seeing your doctor again. You will probably need antibiotics at that time.
-If you begin to drool and/or can not swallow your own salvia, I would go to the emergency room.
