What Is The Difference Between Atorvastatin And Atorvastatin Calcium?
what is the difference between Atorvastatin drugs and Atorvastatin Calcium drugs? I had been taking Atorvastatin tablets for 3-4 years. The last 2 prescriptions of mine that were filled by the pharmacy were filled with Atorvastatin Calcium. Why the change?
1. As per my knowledge, there is no difference between the two brands of the same drug.
2. atorvastatin calcium contains an excipient [ an inactive ingredient in the form of calcium carbonate] and is equally effective in treating/reducing cholesterol and can be used instead of atorvastatin.
PS. Remember that what is valuable for one patient may extend no benefit for the other, so if someone wants to know how much benefit is expected then one need an estimation of his cardiovascular risk which is based on certain parameters like blood pressure, smoking, diabetes & age.
