What Is The Difference Between Eltroxin And Thyronorm?

I am a hypothyroid patient for over 25 years. 62 years, 5ft, 7in, 82 kg. I was on 125 mcg Thyronorm for over a year. On April 12 my T3 , T4, TSH were tested at Lal Path Labs as 3.04, 105 and 8.726. I self corrected the dosage to 150mcg Thyronorm. On 8th June the test was repeated and TSH was reported at 10.23. Got a recheck done on 10th June. TSH reported was12.33. Is there a difference between Eltroxin and Thyronorm? Does the increase affect blood pressure? It is coming around 140, 85. Higher than earlier. I take the Thyronorm in the morning at the same time I also take Shelcal500 and an ASA50. Is there any clash. What do you advise

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Both are thyroxine hormone (Levothyroxine) preparations manufactured by two different companies and are equally effective in the treatment of hypothyroidism. Taking levothyroxine along with shelcal-500 and ASA-50 at the same decrease the absorption of levothyroxine and hence its effectiveness which is reflected in the form of persistently elevated TSH on three occasions.

To ensure adequate absorption from the gut and get maximum effects, levothyroxine should always be taken on an empty stomach 1-2 hours before breakfast. And when on treatment for getting relief from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, TSH should be maintained in the optimal range of 0.3-4 mU/mL. A slight increase in blood pressure can be seen initially with the use of levothyroxine. Any dose adjustment should be done only by your treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
