What Is The Difference Between Wellbutrin XL And Wellbutrin SR?
What is the difference between the wellbutin xl and SR? I am currently looking at insurance for 2017. The formulary has bupropion hcl TB12 and bupropion hcl TB24 150mg with different copays. Looking at my prescription bottle it say bupropion XL and I am not sure which of the above mentioned is the one I am taking. Thanks for your help! :)
The main difference between these two formulations is dose frequency.
Wellbutrin XL (Extended release) and Wellbutrin SR (Sustained release) are the same generic antidepressant Bupropion which is used to treat major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder and also to help people quit smoking by reducing cravings and other withdrawal effects.
The differences are in how they get Bupropion into the body.
The Wellbutrin SR takes 5-6 hrs to get into the body and given TWICE daily whereas Wellbutrin XL takes closer to 8 hours to get into the body and hence given ONCE daily.
As explained above, Wellbutrin XL corresponds to bupropion hcl TB24 (as it is given ONCE daily) and Wellbutrin SR to bupropion hcl TB12 (as it is given TWICE daily) respectively.
Therefore it appears that you are taking bupropion hcl TB24 (Wellbutrin XL).
Hope I could answer your query. Best wishes.
