Has anyone compared the effectiveness of desiccated thyroid and Thyronorm 50? My 75 year old mother is taking Thyronorm 50 along with medications for sugar, heart problems (she had angioplasty), gas problems, etc. She has poor health, she is very weak and not really recovering properly. I am thinking of moving her from Thyronorm to natural desiccated thyroid and I was wondering if doctors in India have done any comparative study.
Welcome and thank you for asking! I can understand your query and i am trying to give you some more information regarding under active thyroid treatment. There are many studies done in order to compare levothyroxine with desiccated thyroid but there are no advantages, except in some special cases where T3 remains still low despite taking Levothyroxine. So if the hormonal level remains within the normal ranges with levothyroxine there is no reason to change treatment. The symptoms seem not to be realted to underactive thyroid since the hormonal level is within the normal ranges. Hope the information will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
