Hello, It seems that your son has pre-auricular sinus. That is an opening just in front of the ear. That is a congenital abnormality ie present since birth. If your son hearing is good then do not worry . This problem does not leads to any other problem . You can get it operated after the infection settles down . To make you understand---Actually the ear is made of small swellings and then the swellings fuse and make the external ear which is visible to you. its a non fusion of first and second swelling and so a pit or sinus remains . It is because of the obstruction to outside mouth of the opening so the sinus gets infected. Take antibiotics and never get done a incision and drainage of the swelling which some quacks do. Get it operated by an ENT or plastic surgeon . Its a small operation and will give a permanent relief. In doubt do reply.
