What Is The Life Expectancy Of A Person Having One Kidney In Working Condition?

Stage 5 ckd due to Upj in left kidney. Told right is toast. Possible crossing vessels. Stent placed, next test at 33 percent, since had many tests, renal scan , ct , etc. so single kidney in trouble. Urologist says my kidney will not improve. All tests results will be at his office when I meet with him next week. Should I be worried about the life of this remaining kidney. Not sure of secondary disease yet. Not sure why right kidney failed completely. Been stable creatinine for 18 years, with some structural changes. So confusing

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the functioning one kidney needs to be evaluated in terms of GFR, parenchymal changes, tubular functioning and other data to co relate on clinical grounds. If there is no distral obstruction, drainage is clear, glomeruli are functioning better and hydration is maintained , renal function must be maintained over a period of time if no further insult is given to kidney.

However, for the comments regarding the life expectancy, multiple parameters have to be evaluated by in person examination along with report evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
