What Is The Life Expectancy Of An Elderly Person With EF Of 10?

how long can an elderly (84 yr old man) live with an egfr of 10 - was 12 6 weeks ago - was on naproxen (now stopped) and diuretic and bp meds - can he recover a bit now that naproxen has been stopped - kind of very annoyed that this wasn t dealt with better - he was hospitalized in March of this year with Congestive heart failure - they were worried about kidneys but I received no education regarding that, he s been to his GP 3 x, first time they said his kidney function had improved slightly, then second time (6 wks ago) I asked about getting blood work for his kidney function - Dr said I was going to do it next visit, but we can do it now - turns out, as I only found out Thursday and yesterday that the blood work 6 wks ago showed an egfr of 12, now it s at 10 - So, we immediately stopped the naproxen - but what they hey? Is there any chance he can recover some of his kidney function. He says he doesn t feel worse - he s pretty used to feeling ill - but he looks better than when he was in the hospital in March. The nurse confirmed that he s been referred to the renal clinic (urgent - with the blood work on the form). What can I do now, what will happen.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

With this age group, GFR tends to be very low as normal variants but Naproxen or NSAIDs can cause rapid deterioration of renal function. Ultrasound KUB may be done to look for signs of chronic kidney disease or obstructive uropathy if any or acute kidney injury.

As chronic deterioration may not be reversible entirely however acute kidney injury can be reversible UPTI very much extent in a renal clinic. Urinary sodium, Urinalysis, Calcium, phosphate levels etc may also be helpful to differentiate.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
