Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is The Life Expectancy Of Someone With 20% Heart Function?
My father recently was told his heart function is at =20%. He has diabetes, and was recently told kidney problems, as well. I m assuming the medications and kidney problems isn t helping is heart condition. He had a quadruple bypass ~17 years ago and had a stent put in ~3 years ago. He just turned 59. He s rather quiet on his declining health. I m just trying to figure out if I should be prepared for the worst or if he has any options left.
The diabetes would have likely contributed to the renal disease this is one of the well-known complications of diabetes. Control of his blood sugars may help to slow down progression. There are medications that help with heart failure but unfortunately they cannot restore heart function as it was, but mainly stabilize it.
Poor diabetic control and kidney disease would, as you mentioned, have an impact on his heart disease. With poor heart function and declining kidney function, the prognosis is not good but you should consider discussing the specifics with his doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
