Pancreatic Cancer Surgery, tumor removed from pancreas endoscopic and laproscopic. Currently cancer free, just off feeding tube, abdominal pump, ports, and pancreatic drain removed. Chemo is now being recommended. I want to know for sure what the name of the blood test indicating pancreatic cancer cells in blood, so I may ask about this.
Hi Thanks for your query. I appreciate your concern for the blood test indicating pancreatic cancer.
This blood test is referred to as CA19-9.
CA19-9 is a tumor marker (substance) produced by pancreatic cancer cells In addition to to pancreas it also produced by cancers of gall bladder and the stomach.
Its level is measured in the blood to assess whether treatment is working or not. A decrease in the level of a tumor marker or a return to the marker’s normal level may indicate that the cancer is responding to treatment, whereas no change or an increase may indicate that the cancer is not responding. If all of the cancer has been removed, this test can also be done to look for the cancer coming back i.e, recurrence.
Hope this answers your query.
