My endocrinologist is very concerned about raising my TSH level. For the last year, he keeps reducing my synthroid dose and his latest instruction is to take .125 dose. That is down from .175 but my TSH level has not changed. The last time I was on .125 I could not feel my legs and "looked" hypothyroid. Can you tell me why he seems to concerned about this now. My thyroid was removed 20 years ago and my parathyroids also disappeared. For ten years I took .225 and .250 alternating and I did fine. No heart problems or bone thinning. Now I have gained 25 pounds! Help!
While on treatment you need to keep your T4 and TSH normal.(T4 in upper half of normal range and TSH preferably 0.5 - 3.5 miu/L.). If you over dose it may help you lose weight at the expense of bone and muscle thinning. This is not a healthy way. That may be the reason for your doctors concern. Over dose can also produce cardiac problems which can be dangerous as age advances.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
