Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Dr, My girlfriend who is 40 years of age with type 1 diabetes for the past 15 years has a hemo creatinine reading of 254.2 umol/L( 8 hr. fasting). After which, the doctor asked for a urine test and had albumin at negative. what could be the indication? Thank you so much. Dave
Creatinine is a protein found in muscles excreted by the kidney. The normal range of creatinine in women is 74 to 107 micromoles per liter. High creatinine levels in the blood indicates damage in the kidney. Kidney disease can be identified for urine routine. Since she is a chronic diabetic, kidney disease is more common. Albumin in urine indicates abnormal kidney function which is normally not found in urine. Her report is negative for albumin. I suggest to repeat the test to reconfirm the fact that her kidney's filtration and absorption is good.
Dehydration is an acute condition causing elevated creatinine levels. High protein intake such as meat will increase the blood creatinine levels. Kidney stones will obstruct the excretion of urine cause hydronephrosis results in high creatinine levels. Ultrasound of the abdomen helps very much to identify the renal stones, hydronephrosis, renal stones, etc. Consult a nephrologist, if there is any renal pathology.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
