Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello my name davia, I have thyroid issues, and it is not cancer. The doctor say i need to have it removed because it is so huge. Also because i am so young. I am so scared. Well my question is after having them removed will i gain alot of weight? Also will i have a scar on my neck? and how long will it take me to recover?
After the surgery to remove the thyroid patients generally should be able to stand and recover quite soon, within the first day or two. The scar is generally small and according to the lines in the neck and not much visible most of the times.
If the thyroid will be removed partially then very likely no major problems will arise but you will need to regularly monitor the TSH to make sure your thyroid is producing enough hormones. If the thyroid is removed completely then you will need to take thyroid hormones daily and regularly check TSH to make sure you are taking enough dose.
Mostly there is not an increased risk for weight gain if you do take the proper dose of the thyroid hormones.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
