Hello,

After the surgery to remove the thyroid patients generally should be able to stand and recover quite soon, within the first day or two. The scar is generally small and according to the lines in the neck and not much visible most of the times.

If the thyroid will be removed partially then very likely no major problems will arise but you will need to regularly monitor the TSH to make sure your thyroid is producing enough hormones.
If the thyroid is removed completely then you will need to take thyroid hormones daily and regularly check TSH to make sure you are taking enough dose.

Mostly there is not an increased risk for weight gain if you do take the proper dose of the thyroid hormones.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
