What Is The Prognosis For A Fetus With Bilateral Renal Pelvis Dilatation?

Hi Dr, My baby showing bilateral renal pelvis dilation left 5.2mm and right 4mm in 21st week scan. Good thing is Amnotic fluid is good. But doctor says this is because of urine flow backwards and 50% common problem. But we are panic. Can you please give some input Thanks, Krishna.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Mild pelvic dilation is quite common and nothing much to worry. Frequent follow up only is required. Pelvic dilation of more than 10 mm may cause problems after birth like hydronephrosis. In your case there is only mild dilation and it is not significant. Do a follow up scan on 32 weeks and an ultrasound immediately after birth.

Wishing you good health.
