What Is The Prognosis For A Person Undergoing A Craniectomy Procedure?

A craniectomy procedure will be done in the morning on my brother to remove a large blood clot and he has several brain bleeds . He has been an alcoholic for at least 35 yrs, chronic cigarette smoker for almost that long. Not responding to attempts to dissolve large clot in brain frontal lobe. Based on my research I believe this is very high risk and the outcome not good with or without surgery..his greatest fear since he was young was to be trapped in his own body. I will accept whatever occurs. My great desire for him is peace, he has never experienced that in this life. It is ironic that often that which we fear most we bring upon ourselves.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The prognosis will depend on the size and severity of the bleed. The bleed impinging on the vital areas like brain stem may have bad prognosis. Generally the prognosis is good among young individuals.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
