What Is The Prognosis If Patient Never Woke Up After AAA Surgery, Kidneys Are Failing And Having Pneumonia In Left Lung?

16 Days ago my sister had AAA surgery. She has copd and congestive heart failure. She has never woke up from the surgery and is on a vent in ICU. The surgeon said it was the largest anerysum he had ever encountered. Her kidneys are failing and she now has a pnumoina in her left long lung. She seems to be restless puling at her gown. I have noticed that around her mouth it is a gray color. The nurses say that she isn't in pain and won't remember anything. Each day she looks worse than the day before. To be honest I feel she isn't going to pull through this. The Doctor say's one day at a time but, everyday something new is happening to her.

Cardiac Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for the query.
What I understand is that the situation of your sister is critical. Neurological problems are a common complication after aortic surgery.
The prognosis depends on the damage to the brain. A CT scan of the head may help to evaluate the situation. The chances for her brain to recover are vague because of the fact that she never woke up in 16 days.
On the other hand, we have renal failure and pneumonia which lower again chances of recovering.
But I suggest not to loose hope because many of this patients can go home.
