Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi I have a friend born in 1967 that has systolic heart failure ACC/AHA stage C, what does that consist of? he is taking Atorvastatin and Metaprolol succinate plus aspirin 81mg and he flops like a fish out of water atleast 4-5 times a day from not being able to breath and his heart. I just drug interactioned his meds and find that metaprolol and aspirin are working against each other. what exactly is his prognosis? thank you
The medication he is taking is appropriate for the condition. Atorvastatin is anti hyperlipidemic drug used to control bad cholesterol level in blood to prevent atherosclerosis.
Metoprolol is beta blocker, although not have any acute effect but on long term use it reduces mortality in heart patient. So, if he has no asthma or COPD this medicine is drug of choice for cardiac failure.
Aspirin is antiplatelet drug used to prevent thrombus formation and extension in coronaries which can precipitate ischaemia and ultimately has bad prognosis on heart failure.
Other drugs which can be added are Furosemide and Digoxin. However, for that you have to consult physician to get it prescribed. According to my opinion, furosemide 20 mg daily should be started.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Hiren Hirpara
