What Is The Reason For Having Rapid Heartbeat In An Athlete?

My 21-year old son is a student athlete in college - junior year. Since last summer he has experienced a few episodes of a rapid heartbeat. First few did not last long, recent one kept him up most of the night. EKG at Family Physician is normal. Been referred to a Cardic Electrophysiologist for blood and urine work and an endocardiogram. Your thoughts?

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
I really appreciate your concern this is in fact other way round, the heart beats in athlete reads low (Bradycardia) but here in your son's case it rapid one, look initially the rapid heart rate could be there and that is because of exercise induced but later this comes to normal and slow down gradually, I do not think this could be a some kind of problem and no need to worry about this still cardiac evaluation is must to clear the doubts hope this information helps you have nice day.
I find this answer helpful
