What Is The Remedy For The Ear Infection, Sore Throat And Stomach Pain In A 9 Year Old?
my daughter is 9 yrs old and was seen at a minute clinic 3 days ago. She had a double ear infection, sore throat and stomach pain. This is the 3rd time in 5 weeks we have been to see someone for her ears. 1st time was treated with omnicef for 10 days, 2nd time it was diagnosed as fluid in ear no infection and now a double ear infection. on day 4 of zithromax but threw up loading dose on day 1. seems to have gotten rid of ear pain but still has low grade fever 99-100 . and belly pain. Should I take her back to the doctor or not? lee
Hello. Thank you for your question. I am sorry your daughter is not well. Sounds like the omnicef didn't fully cure the initial infection, and left some fluid behind which ultimately became reinfected. Also, we can assume she never got the zithromax. So, how to approach? Firstly, keep in mind that not all ear infections, even bacterial ones, need to be treated in this age group. The fact that her ear pain is gone is the best sign that the infection is resolving, even without antibiotic. The temp of 99-100 is not anything to be overly concerned about. The belly pain is probably due to the antibiotic treatment. I would treat this with a probiotic (found in yogurt or as an over the counter powdered supplement). I recommend consulting with your doctor if the fever increases, or if the ear pain returns. I don't believe the zithromax is necessary at this point.
