Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had pneumonia two summers ago and am experiencing upper respiratory infection symptoms. My doctor gave me 40 500 mg Cephalexin for a trip I made to Nepal after the pneumonia and I have never used them. Does the drug have a shelf life that would last to this point. I received the prescription and have never opened it on 9/22/2013
Hi.. Thanks for the query.. First of all I would like to tell you that every medicine has its manufacturing and expiry date mentioned on its strips or covers and every time a medicine should be taken only after confirming its expiry date..
Cephalexin has a shelf life of approximately 3 years when stored in a proper way in closed air tight containers and in a cool dry place..
BUT you should not count the time duration from the day you have bought it from the chemist. It is decided as per the date of manufacture and expiry is mentioned by the manufacturer on the medicine strip covers..
Check for the expiry date on your medicine cover and take only if it has not crossed the expiry date mentioned on the strip otherwise you should discard the medicine.
Hope your query is solved..
Thanks and regards..
