What Is The Solution For Severe Bleeding During Periods Due To Fibroids?
Hi Dr, I am 41 yrs old. I have been experiencing heavy bleeding during every month during my periods. Usually first 2 days. I was told by my Dr few yrs ago that I have fibroids & that's the cause of this heavy bleeding. I am not on any contraceptive. Is there a cure for this besides removal of uterus.
Bleeding is one of the commonest symptom produced by fibroids. They increase the uterine surface area and hence more area is available to cause bleeding. They may also protrude into the uterine cavity and cause bleeding.
1. If the fibroids are one or two in number a myomectomy or removal of fibroids with preserving the uterus is an option. 2. Other options are drugs like progesterone, Gn Rh analogues and danazole. The last two may lead to thin bones and danazole also produces hirsuitism. 3. Uterine artery embolisation is to block the blood vessel that supplies to the fibroid. The fibroids shrink in many cases but may grow again. 4. Other option is endometrial ablation therapy where the uterine lining is destroyed by using heat or cold current. Future childbearing may not be possible after this. So discuss all of these with your doctor and choose the ones that suit you the best.
