Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My ESR level is 86. I am 61 years old. Doctor has prescribed some medicines which I am taking from last 20days but it is not coming down. Last week I checked it is still 82. I am having severe joint pains, wrist pain. Could you please suggest me to which specialist I should go to get rid from this. Should I go to an orthopedics doctor or medicine specialist for further check up?
Hello! I read carefully your query and understand your concerns. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a nonspecific test that it is used to help detect conditions associated with acute and chronic inflammation, including infections, cancers, and autoimmune diseases. So an elevated ESR indicates that somewhere in your body is happening an inflammatory process.
The normal range of ESR for your age is less than 20 mm/hr.Your ESR of 82 mm/hr indicates that you might have an inflammatory disease or an infection in your body. If we relate this finding with your symptoms of joint paints,I can think of inflammatory joint disease (Arthritis ).
I suggest you to consult an Rheumatologist doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Hope my answer has helped. Take care. Dr.Rovena
