What Is The Survival Rate When Diagnosed With Stage-3 Esophageal Cancer?

respected sir, my brother in law age 47 years has food pipe cancer for the last six months, but detected only two months back. Doctor operated him on 15th February, 2017, doctor operated by thinking that it is 1 or 2 stage, but, when operated they saw that it is 3rd stage. The tumor has been spread from food pipe, breathe pipe and one blood vain. So they have not removed the tumor. Now they are telling that only other treatment will be done after 1 months such as chemotherapy and radiation. What are survival rate in this case.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
There is mortality data on patients with stage III oesophagal cancer that suggests that patients receiving surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy may have a 33% survival at 3 years. The survival can vary between 6 to 33% and depends on the type of treatment that they have received. This also varies with the sub stage of oesophageal cancer, ie whether it is stage IIIa, IIIb or IIIc.
