i am suffering from back pain which has also iniated leg pain. i have done a mri of the LS region. my report states that at the l5-s1 level the canal apd is 8.4mm and there is a disc desiccation and prolapse causing bilateral traversing nerve root impingement at l5-s1 level

The initial treatment for back and leg pain attributable to disc degeneration would include: phsyiotherapy (modality based like Short wave diathermy,ultrasonic massage etc), exercises ( core spinal exercises , pilates), medications( analgesics,antiinflammatory,Topical gel or spray like applications)Wearing a lumbo sacral corset or belt if you travel long distances or sit for long for initial 1 week or so) and injections into the spine(can be tried over 6 weeks - however duration and amount of relief unpredictable).
Surgery would be absolute indication if any weakness in the legs, difficulty in passing urine or motion ( attributable to spime porblem).Unrelenting pain after 2 to 3 months of conservative treatment would be a relative indication.
