What Is The Treatment For Blood Stream Infection?

I have a relative who currently has a blood stream infection and compromised lung function, would this be considered probable ARDS? And if so, is it SAFE or the right thing to use BiPAP to treat or help support the lung function? And for how long would this be done before other measures would need to be taken?
