What Is The Treatment For Chronic Hiccups?

My fiancee has hypothyroidism and has had chronic hiccups for a few years now. Her former endocrinologist told her it was caused by her nodules. Now her new endocrinologist told her that is highly unlikely and should see a gastroenterologist. Which is true? And is there something that can be done to end the chronic hiccups permanently?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Treating long-term (chronic) or persistent hiccups will usually require some specific measures. Since chronic hiccups cause health issues and can also be a sign of a larger health concern, the majority of treatments require additional tests such as gastroenterological work-up or gastroscopy.

You usually can’t treat the issue yourself or resolve the problem at home. Treatments depend on the underlying cause and may include:
• Taking medications such as Baclofen, Chlorpromazine, or Metoclopramide (Reglan)
• Having surgery
• Electrically stimulating the vagus nerve through an implanted device
• Injecting the phrenic nerve with anesthetic acupuncture

In most cases some of these are successful but not all are available in all institutions so you should find an appropriate specialist hospital for such disorders.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
