Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
sir,i have been a patient of depression since the last 5yrs.the doctors prescribed escitalopram oxalate 10mg OD and clonazepam 1mg H/S.i recovered almost 90%.and then sir i had suffered from benzodiazepine(clonazepam) dependency.tapering had been done and was stopped succesfully 2 weeks back.now i am suffering from extreme anxiety and depression.i am lost in some thoughts frequently, agitated and dont want to mix with people, think negative thoughts .doctors prescribed lamotrigine 200mh h/s,bupropion 150 mg BD,toficalm 50 mg tds and zolpidem 12.5mg H/S and olanzapine 2.5mg TDS.whats my real problem?is it because of BZD withdrawal symptom or increased depression or side effects of the medications?? i have a phobia that i will develop dependency in zolpidem or toficalm again.
You was on Escitalopram and Clonazepam for about 5 years and then medicines were stopped by reducing the doses gradually. Now with in 2 weeks you have developed symptoms like negative thoughts, agitation, lost in some thoughts etc. These symptoms are probably due to relapse of symptoms of depression and may be due to some bipolar disorder as you also have symptoms of agitation. As per my opinion these symptoms are not occurring due to withdrawal of benzodiazepines.
The fear or phobia that you will get dependent on zolpidem or toficalm are probably due to anxiety. If these symptoms are causing significant distress to your normal functioning then you should discuss about their management. No need to fear from dependency because if taken with proper prescription these drugs can be tapered successfully.
Thanks, hope this helps you. Take Care
