Hi Mr. Dutta, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM.
The pain your wife has been having is a
radicular pain which radiates from the back. It may be due to
lumbar spondylosis or degenerative
lumbar disease or a prolapsed
intervertebral disc in the lumbar region. It may also be due to sciatica.
An MRI of the Lumbosacral spine can better elicit the underlying reason and it may also guide the treatment management part.
However, the medications she is having are correct. Fibrogesic would help in neuropathic or radicular pain, whereas the other medicines would help in degenerative disease condition. However, till date there is no medicine for absolute cure for this problem. Fibrogesic does help, but to a limited extent and also it takes some time to act .
If the pain is severe, she should have bed rest. Traction is an old but very effective methods.
Physiotherapy and local heat therapy are also effective and they can also interrupt disease progression.
After subsidence of pain, if possible ask your wife to avoid prolonged sitting, carrying heavy weight and advocate to continue with abdominal muscle strengthening exercise if possible.
She may also need a lumbar brace.
If the pain still remains intractable you should
consult a spine surgeon with your MRI report.
Surgical treatment may be needed at that point of time.
For any further questions, please write back to me directly.
Regards,
Dr. Kaushik
