I read your query and I understand your concern.

First step are lifestyle changes such as

-avoid stimulants like caffeine, large meals or alcohol in the evening, -physical exercise in the afternoon, yoga in the evening helps
-adequate exposure to natural light to maintain healthy sleep wake cycle
-don't watch TV or listen to radio in bed, try to associate bed with sleep
-try to avoid stressing experiences in the evening
-avoid napping during the day

In case these measures don't work I suggest a medical evaluation before starting treatment in order to investigate for causes which warrant specific treatment like anxiety disorders, sleep apnea etc. It is not good to take general sleep inducing treatment without trying to identify and address the cause first, such drugs can have side effects, cause dependance and tolerance, so should be used only if really necessary.

I hope to have been of help.
