What Is The Treatment For Tooth Infection During Pregnancy?
I am 17 weeks pregnant and went to the doctor for a tooth infection. My doctor was not in so I saw a different one. I informed him that I was pregnant and he prescribed me apo-clindamycin. I am allergic to sulfa drugs but nothing else. Everything I read online says not to take this drug while pregnant. Why would he prescribe this when there are safer options like penicillin?
Clindamycin is a category B drug meaning that there are no human data but animal studies do not show any adverse effects on babies. Most drugs fall in this category and we use them safely. The human data is not available as it is not ethical to test a pregnant women with a new drug to look and see if it causes defects in baby.
So this drug can be used safely. However if you are in doubt you may consult another doctor and get another drug prescribed.
