inflammation of diverticula, small pouches that form in intestinal wall (primarily colon); their opening can become blocked by small particles like seeds, nuts, popcorn, etc & the pouch becomes inflamed; it may even rupture, spilling intestinal contents into abdominal cavity & cause
peritonitis); many "tics" can bleed when inflamed.
It is treated with antibiotics ( oral or IV depending upon severity) or surgery if perforation. U have to b seen and examined by a physician to make the diagnosis and then treatment plan. Once healed, HIGH FIBER diet should be used and avoid junk foods and fast foods, avoid
constipation, drink plenty of liquids, take fiber supplements such as
Metamucil.
Indications for surgery include free perforation with sepsis, an abscess that can't be treated with percutaneous
drainage, fistulas to other organs, strictures or obstruction, and occasionally numerous recurrent episodes of
diverticulitis.
Please consult a gastro surgeon and he will decide what is best for you after examination.
