Is Epilepsy Curable?

sir my baby of 1 month is suffering from epilepsy.he was admitted in hospital with following diagnosis :-prematurity,hypoglycemia,sepsis,anemia,lbw and iugr.baby was released from the hospital after 1 month which was 3 days before.doctors have prescribed following medicine to continue;- 1.syp Bioclar (.8ml twice daily) 2.Syp Levipil (.2ml thrice daily) 3.Tab Hisone(5mg 1/2 tab twice daily) 4.Zincovit 5.G Folvin Levipil is prescribed for epilepsy.sir kindly advice whether this can be cured or not?if not then which medicine should be prescribed?sir my baby doesn t suck milk from breast and has to be fed with spoon.while taking milk he more often than not sleeps which increases the difficulty in feeding him.kindly advice

Hi,

Seizures affect the normal development of the brain of the child so your first target should be to control those seizures completely even if this means that the child has to take more then one anti-epileptic. Then, we should also have knowledge of whether the child developed birth asphyxia at the time of birth or not and what was his APGAR score at that time. This will be documented in the hospital birth records/discharge summary of the child.

Then, an MRI and an EEG will help us decide about the development of the brain and any abnormality in the brain. Sucking difficulty is common in pre-mature children so the appetite of the child is more important in this case. Finally, we will have to look at the developmental milestones of the child whether he/she is achieving them on time or not!
So I suggest an appointment with a pediatric neurologist and plan an optimal treatment strategy.
