Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is The Treatment If Anxiety Sets Off Epilepsy?
I have struggled with depression and anxiety since my pre-teen years. I am now 20, and when "triggered" or in specific social situations, I shut down and don't respond the way I normally do with others. The anxiety also sets off my epilepsy (JME). I understand that anxiety medications won't solve my problems for me, but I would like some sort of aid until I can be comfortable without them. I have no history of medication abuse.
You have anxiety and depression since your teen years. You still have anxiety in social situations. You also have epilepsy (JME, Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy). You are already on anxiety medicines, but I would like to tell you that some medicines like beta blockers as Propranolol, Atenolol can help to reduce anxiety in social situations. You can take these medicines in anxiety provoking situations like in group discussion or presentations. Consult your doctor for these medicines.
For JME you have to consult a neuropsychiatrist. Medicines like Sodium Valproate, Carbamazepine helps to control these seizures. It is very unlikely that such seizures got precipitated by anxiety only. Visit your doctor for proper treatment as anti-anxiety drugs will not prove useful.
Thanks, hope this helps you
