What Is The Treatment Of Laryngitis After Bypass Surgery ?
My father has been suffering from Laryngitis for the past 2 weeks. What is the course of treatment to be followed? He underwent a Bypass surgery 3 weeks back and since then, he has been suffering from loss of voice. Pl advise.
Laryngitis is due ti inflammation of the vocal cords, cause being an infection , allergy or even voice exertion . I suggest he needs an ENT examination and treatment is antibiotics, voice rest and voice exercises .
Wish him a speedy recovery

General & Family Physician, Dr. Akshith's Response
Hello and welcome to healthcare magic!!
sinc ehe has undergone a major surgery he would have been on anaesthesia during the procedure and intubation might have caused the inflammation. i suggest he rest and you can take him to an ENT specialist for further management based on the findings.
1. If his laryngitis is not improving, get a video laryngoscopy done.
2. Vocal cord edema or granulations are usually the result of intubation trauma.
3. If there is vocal cord dysfunction or paralysis, especially the left cord, then the possibility of left recurrent laryngeal nerve damage during surgery arises. This may happen in rare cases due to the fact that the left nerve travels through the neck and chest while on the right side it's course is restricted only to the neck.
4. If there is true larygitis, or nerve damage is present whatever the cause, and if it is not severe, all the above conditions should recover. In case of nerve paresis, the opposite side will compensate and his voice will recover.
5. Laryngitis may also occur secondary to lung infection. How is his chest x-ray and cough reflex?
