Hi doctor, one of my relatives is having leprosy for 2 years, actually he has a patch on the face which is dull looking and less sensation I would say. Otherwise normal. I heard leprosy the fingers, toes are self cut, disfiguring too. is it really leprosy? if so what is the treatment for this?
Hi welcome to H.C.M.Forum. so far as my knowledge is conserned it is not a quarentine disease.there may be tests for detection like IgM test for specific disease. but when she was been treated full course it may not be a problem. but always it is better to have consultation with a dermatologist and clear your doubts. you can approach the ASK A DOCTOR channel to have direct approach to skin specialist. thank you.
Yes Leprosy has the features explained by you. The bacterium once effects the nerves. There is loss of sensation and eventually the affected person loses figure. He doesn?t feel the sensations and during injury he doesn,t care for that because of no pain. Gradually the breaking of toes or fingers take place. This is only in late stages. Your know person has early stage leprosy we suppose. It should be immediately treated with a long course of anti lepra drugs. The affected person can also shed the bacterium through cough, sneeze etc. Hence the air is contagious.
Being a stigma the person is ill-treated. He in fact needs lot of family and social support. The medication should be continued till the doctor asks him to stop.
Treatment of early stage of leprosy includes three antibiotics dapsone, rifampin, and clofazimine for treatment, which takes six months to a year or more. During the course of treatment, the body may react to the dead bacteria with pain and swelling in the skin and nerves. This is treated with pain medication, opioids and steroids.
