What Is The White Mask On The Tongue With Pink Spots?

My 16 month old daughter had a low grade fever yesterday, then this morning upon waking it was 103.2. She had been very tired and cranky. I noticed her tongue has a white mask over it with a few dots of pink showing through and the tip is pink with dots of white...What could be going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Having a low grade fever and waking up suddenly with high fever is related to upper respiratory tract infection. The white mask with red dots on your daughter's tongue is related to dehydration and infection she is going through.

I advise to get her examined by her doctor or ENT specialist as she might need a course of antibiotics.

Meanwhile, I advise to encourage her to:
- increase fluids intake (water, juice, tea)
- get a proper oral hygiene
- do gargle with water and salt
- take 1 teaspoon of olive oil and honey

Hope it helped and wish fast recovery!
