What Kind Of Food Should Be Given For A Child With Gastro Infection?

Hi, is it OK to feed children normal food and drinks during a gastro infection? Both children are past the vomiting stage now and are experiencing the gut symptoms. One eight year old and one two year old still breastfeeding. They are still hungry and thirsty but not eating their normal amounts of food. They are getting some gut pains after food intake.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think you should give liquids like juice, water with oral rehydration salts, soups, Greek yogurt, banana, apple sauce, toast as long as they do not vomit.

Otherwise, if they continue vomiting, they should start intravenous treatment. Give probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora. Do consult with their pediatrician if symptoms won't improve.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
