What Kind Of Walker Should Be Used After A Hip Replacement Surgery?

My husband is getting ready for hip replacement surgery. We have a lot of information from the surgeon and hospital but i question what kind of walker is preferred. We have one of those rolling walkers but what they show in the literature are those walkers where you take one step at a time and move the walker. Does it matter which one he uses.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my surgical experience, the walker is very vital part of post-op recovery after THR surgery. In our clinic, I recommend type of walker as per the patient needs and other clinical parameters; still I can comment here as. There are 3 types of walkers available as:
- non rolling (conventional)
- front 2 wheel rolling
- all 4 wheels rolling
As after THR surgery, only 1st two options are routinely recommended as third option is more prone for loss of balance and slippage. Preference among first two differs widely, but I personally recommend conventional non rolling walker for best stability, confidence to move and least chances of fumbling or fall.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
