What Medication Is Advisable For Depression While On Ativan For Anxiety?

I suffer from anxiety, but the amount of stress and family situations has changed my anxiety level more recently, I am helping care for my 92 year old mother who recently had a stroke, We have some cna help, but I am juggling going back and forth 45 miles every other day helping with her. My son was also recently incarcerated on a minor charge. He has been in a non violent farm jail for the last 8 months. The combination of these two situations has left me extremely helpless feeling. I find myself crying more than usual and feeling unhappy and I retired last year and my financial situation has also changed. I worry about my finances. I have been divorced 33 years. I am 68. I felt this time in my life would be more relaxing and enjoyable but right now it is not what I expected. I am taking ativan for anxiety, but I feel like it s not working as well with the added stress. What medication should I be on for depression that has the least side effects. I take synthroid. losartin, and ativan right now. thank you for any help you can give me. Ms Sexton

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It sounds as though you are going through a very rough time. Any of the antidepressants may be helpful, but one that has one of the best side effect profiles and sometimes the earliest onset of action is Lexapro (escitalopram).

This is an SSRI antidepressant. It takes 2-4 weeks for it to kick in. In addition, I highly recommend seeing a counselor/psychologist to help support you as you cope with these situations.

I realize finances are part of the issue, but if your insurance will cover it, then counseling can be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
