What Medication Is Suggested For Irregular Heartbeat?

I have been taking Clonazepam for approx 6 years to help with sleeping. Initially 0.5mg once at night - then tapered this back to 0.25mg per night 5 x per week with 0.5mg per night 2 x per week for last year. Then tapered back to 0.125 per night for two weeks coupled with 10mg amitriptyline per night. Have now cut the clonazepam completely but have substituted with 20mg amitriptyline per night intending to try and get this back to 10mg per night. Am a fit 53 yr old male height 187cm and weight 84kg. My typical pulse rate is around 55 and systolic BP around 115 to 125. Over the last few months I have had several epsiodes of 3 to 4 days where my pulse has been up between 85 and 95 and systolic BP between 135 and 150. Then had an edpisode in the middle of the night where my pulse was varying wildly between 55 up to a maximum of 138 and BP up from 155 to 186. These have settled back now to around 80 bpm and 130 to 140 but am now experiencing quite irregular heartbeat. I have had ECG twice in the last few months and both have been normal. I belive this all to be part of the withdrawal process and would like to see it through. Does this sound typical for this withdrawal process

Cardiologist 's  Response
Dear friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

May not be entirely accountable by the withdrawal
Amitriptyline could also cause arrhythmia

You need more investigations to evaluate the cause… / The first step is to see a Cardiologist / The events need to be DOCUMENTED by ElectroCardioGram (EKG). Standard ECG records the electrical activity of the heart, for a few seconds. It can detect the arrhythmia occurring during that time only. If the episode occurs randomly or is precipitated by a specific activity - one needs Holter or event monitor.

Discuss with your doctor... The treating doctor alone can suggest further based on his assessment of the situation.

Take care
Good luck
