What Precautionary Measures Are Advised For The Intake Of The Below Medications?
I have a patient who takes all of these medications. Could you suggest any caution while taking these medications together? pt has HTN, afib, and chf. • Zocar 50 mg once a day • Minipres 1 mg once a day • Vasotec 10 mg twice a day • Prilosec 20 mg once a day • Furosemide 40 mg once a day • Effexor 37.5 mg at bedtime • Lanoxin 0.125 mg every other day • Multivitamin once a day • Potassium 40 mEq once a day • Ibuprofen 400 mg q 4 hours as needed for pain • Darvocet N 100 mg q 4 hours as needed for pain • Nitroglycerin ointment, apply 1 inch every day o Digoxin 0.25 mg once a day o Lasix 80 mg twice a day o Calan 240 mg once a day
Hello and thank you for your question. First of all patients with heart failure should not take ibuprofen. It can increase sodium retention and worsen the heart failure. Next, anyone taking lanoxin will need close monitoring of drug levels. Also lanoxin and digoxin are the same thing so they should not be taking both. Again, lasix and furosemide are the same thing and they should not be taking both. Taking potassium can be tricky and they would need potassium levels checked regularly. They need to take in all meds to a doctor for evaluation soon since there seem to be some duplicates Regards
