What Precautions Need To Be Taken For Head Injury Without Any Symptoms?

I was outside with my 6 month old granddaughter and I had her on a toy horse. I had her by one arm and she slipped off the toy out of my hand and fell and hit the back of her head on the brick pavers. She started crying I took her in put a damp cloth on the back of her head and wiped off her back she stopped crying but went to sleep within 10 minutes with all this happening. She was tired that is why I was bringing her into the house but I ve concerned. She seems to be breathing regular and she is sucking her pacificer however I m so worried. How would I know if she has a concussion. When she naps it s always long for a couple of hours what should I do or look for? Please help Terry

Hello,

The important things you should notice is the activity of the child, whether she vomits, whether she is drowsy, whether she is taking her feeds. Usually when there is a fall with associated head injury, the person will immediately vomits and there will be a history of loss of consciousness.

The usual way of managing head injury is to keep the child for neuro observation in the hospital for 24 hours and watch for any danger signs as mentioned in my first sentence. If there are no dangers for 24 hours then the child is discharged. If any danger signs appear in 24 hours then the child will be investigated further with CT head. You have the take the child to a nearby hospital and be under neuro-observation for 24 hours.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
