What Precautions Need To Be Taken Long After Treating Jaundice?

I suffered from Jaundice in 1994 (22 years ago) and was sick for almost 2 months. I took complete rest, managed diet, checked blood regularly for serum bilirubin content. I also take care about drinking water. Does the body become complete immune to jaundice after first infection and complete curing? Or there are still equal chances of getting infection if proper care is not taken especially eating outside/drinking unsafe water. Please advise. Best regards. Milind, Pune, India

Jaundice can occur if:
•     Viral hepatitis A, B, C, D & E
•     Red blood cell destruction - hemolysis
•     Bilirubin from the liver is unable to move into the digestive tract properly–obstruction
Treatment depends on the cause of jaundice. Jaundice that occurs due to hemolysis may be treated by elevating the iron levels in the blood through iron supplements or with the intake of foods rich in iron. Jaundice due to viral hepatitis B & C may be treated with anti-viral medications. Jaundice due to viral hepatitis A & E is treated conservatively by liver tonics such as Liv-52. Surgery may be required in cases of jaundice caused by obstruction. In some cases, jaundice may even develop as a result of, as a side effect from certain medications. In such cases, the jaundice may be treated by altering the dosage or changing the medication. You have not mentioned the cause of jaundice. If it was due to due to hepatitis A or E then no need to worry because there is no chance of chronic liver disease. But if it was due to hepatitis B or C then there is a chance of chronic liver disease. One time infection does not always guarantee immunity. You can get infection now also. Vaccines are available against hepatitis A & B for prevention of infection.
Advice
1.     Make sure that you drink clean, uncontaminated water
2.     Take vaccine for hepatitis A & B
3.     Avoid alcohol
4.     Investigations – HBV & HCV screening

Thanks
